CONGRESSMAN KAHELE STATEMENT ON DEATH OF CAPITOL POLICE OFFICER BRIAN SICKNICK

January 8, 2021

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- U.S. Congressman Kaialiʻi Kahele (HI-02) issued the following statement today on the death of Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick who was killed in the line of duty during the assault on the U.S. Capitol early this week:

“It is with profound sadness that I grieve with my fellow Members of Congress over the passing of Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick who died after defending the U.S. Capitol and protecting members of Congress. Officer Sicknick was a 12-year member of the U.S. Capitol Police, a member of the Air National Guard and a veteran of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. My family and I send our deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and colleagues.

“We must have accountability for the insurrection that took the life of a brave man. This must never happen again. We should never have lost one of our law enforcement officers. I am committed to ensuring we have a full investigation into the security failures that occurred on that day and leading up to the violent attack on one of Americaʻs most sacred buildings. I joined dozens of my colleagues in the House to call on the Comptroller General to initiate an urgent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the acts of insurrection on January 6. I also support prosecuting those responsible for Wednesday’s attack to the fullest extent of the law.

“It is imperative that we honor Officer Sicknick’s memory by standing up to the seditious forces that caused his death. We all take the oath to serve our country. I will continue to discharge my constitutional duties for the democracy we swore to protect.”
