Happy birthday, Edie Ignacio Neumiller, whose retirement allowed her to have not one but two special meals on her birthday — the first being lunch with Sheryl Grady at The Plantation House by Gaylords, and the second being a belated happy birthday Maurina Borgatti meal at JO2 with Laurie Ho, Christine Wong and Bev Pang (she made all the lei po‘o). And, happy birthday, too, Sharron Weber of Tire Warehouse, who was probably hard at work somewhere.

In a markup session of the Armed Services Committee, language was added via the successful passage of an amendment to the 2022 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), for the Secretary of the Airforce and the National Guard Bureau leadership to specifically study bringing permanent aircraft presense and capability into Guam and the Guam Air National Guard.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congressman Kaialiʻi Kahele (HI-02), a member of the House Armed Services Committee (HASC), successfully amended the Fiscal Year 2022 National Defense Authorization Act (FY22 NDAA) during the Committee’s consideration of the bill. The NDAA includes a number of policies championed by Congressman Kahele, and was approved by a bipartisan vote of 57-2. The bill will now move to floor consideration by the full U.S. House of Representatives.

U.S. lawmakers will look into the possibility of establishing a permanent air force unit under the Guam National Guard to further beef up the defense system on the island.

U.S. Rep. Kai Kahele said the annual fiscal 2022 defense bill passed by the House Armed Services Committee today includes multiple provisions for the National Guard — including the establishment of a Space National Guard as a reserve component of the U.S. Space Force — as well as a feasibility study for the establishment of a Hawaii Air Guard aeromedical squadron at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam.

Love of flying brought Lt. Col. Kaiali'i Kahele to the Hawaii Air National Guard. A desire to continue the work of his late father, Gil Kahele, brought him to public office. Now, Kahele is one of only six currently drilling Guardsmen who serve in Congress.
