Internships

Team Kahele offers internships in both my Washington, DC and Hawaiʻi offices. Both internship programs run through the Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters. DC and Hawaiʻi Office interns are compensated for their work.

Internships in a congressional office can be a life changing experience. My team and I are committed to providing students and qualified candidates the opportunity to represent Hawaiʻi’s second congressional district in a meaningful way and help them open the door to careers in public service or related fields. I am proud of the Team Kahele internship alumni, who have learned, grown and been hired in important roles at local, state, or federal positions after completion of their internship.

Check out alumni from my Spring 2021 Intern Class.

Washington, DC

In the Washington, DC office, interns gain invaluable work experience through the internship program. The hours are flexible to accommodate class schedules but generally run from 8:45 am to 6:00 pm when Congress is in session.

Interns will be asked to answer phones, research legislation, attend virtual hearings and briefings, and draft memoranda for myself and my staff. As a result, interns learn about the legislative process and the many other functions of a congressional office.

Hawaiʻi

In Hawaiʻi office hours are flexible to accommodate students’ class schedules and range from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.

District interns will answer constituent calls, assist with federal casework intake, process tour requests, create flyers, assist with virtual event planning, and other district-based projects. District interns will also have the opportunity to virtually shadow field representatives at community events, legislative briefings and meetings. Working with my Hawaiʻi office team allows interns the opportunity to work closely with our constituents.

Ideal candidates should possess:

  • Excellent communication skills

  • A strong attention to detail

  • The ability to work in a fast-paced environment

  • A good sense of humor.

  • Hawaiʻi ties are preferred, but not required
